HONOURS AND AWARDS

ORDER OF MILITARY MERIT  order_of_military_merit_canada_ribbon_mmm

Awarded to those who have demonstrated dedication and devotion beyond the call of duty, achieving conspicuous merit and exceptional military service.  The post-nominal MMM, OMM, CMM shall be used depending on the grade.

ORDER OF ST.JOHN OF JERUSALEM  vostj_ribbon

Members pledge to prevent and relieve sickness and injury, and to act to enhance the health and well-being of people anywhere in the world.  Post-nominal’s are not to be used outside of this order although this is a nationally recognized order.   

SACRIFICE MEDAL  sm_ribbon

Awarded to those wounded or killed in action, and to members whose death under honorable circumstances is a result of injury or disease related directly to military service.

GENERAL CAMPAIGN STAR general_campaign_star_ribbon

Given to recognize members of the Canadian Forces who had directly participated in any military campaign under Canadian or allied command.

GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL swasm_ribbon

Is presented to members deployment outside of Canada with Canadian Forces, though not necessarily in a theater of operations, to provide direct support, on a full-time basis, to operations in the presence of an armed enemy

OPERATIONAL SERVICE MEDAL osm_hum

Presented to anyone working for the Canadian Forces who had directly participated in any military campaign under Canadian or allied command.

SPECIAL SERVICE MEDAL

recognizes members of the Canadian Forces (CF) who have performed a service determined to be under exceptional circumstances, in a clearly defined locality for a specified duration. The SSM recognizes approved activities underway on 11 June 1984 or subsequently established. This medal is always issued with a bar that specifies the special service being recognized, each bar having its own criteria.

CANADIAN PEACEKEEPING SERVICE MEDAL cpsm_ribbon

Recognizes Canadian Peacekeepers deployed outside Canada for a minimum of 30 days, civilians who served with the Canadian Forces on peacekeeping missions.

CANADIAN FORCES DECORATION cd-ribbon

this decoration is awarded to all ranks who have completed 12 years of service and must have a good record of conduct during the final eight years of claimed service.  Claps are awarded for each subsequent 10 years of service.  The post-nominal CD only shall be used in military circles.

MENTIONED IN DISPATCHES

shall be awarded for valiant conduct, devotion to duty or other distinguished service.  Members of the Canadian Forces on active service and other individuals working with or in conjunction with the Canadian Forces on or after November 1, 1990 are eligible for the award of the Insignia.  The oak leaf Insignia is worn on the campaign on mission ribbon for which it was awarded or on the left breast if there was awarded for an operation where a ribbon was not issued.  The short form ‘MID’ is common but is not an approved post-nominal
